The TIMBER XML Database, and Some Applications
H. V. Jagadish

Timber is a native XML database system under development at the University of Michigan. It is native, in that it has been designed from the ground up as an XML system. It is a database system, in that it has the same major modules as a relational database system, including a logical and a physical algebra, a cost-based query optimizer, and access methods designed for efficient evaluation of disk-resident data. In this talk, I will present an overview of Timber, including preliminary performance numbers. I will also touch upon some new application areas, including the management of text data, and the management of uncertain data.
